Low water pressure can be as annoying as water that doesn't quite get hot enough, and can often limit gardening options. As troublesome as it can be often times it's one simple fix away from being just right.
Negotiating with strata organisations will often be difficult, so we’re breaking it down so you can be as equipped as possible to talk to your strata org. Ensure you don't jump to conclusions. Before contacting anyone, inspect your plumbing system to see if you can identify the cause of your problem yourself. If you don't have the time, consider calling a plumber for an inspection. Check that:
No Pipes are corroded
All valves are completely open
The low pressure affects all outlets
Check that it affects hot and cold water
All taps are outputting low pressure water
This should give you a better understanding of the problem you will have to deal with. Although, do note that if you live in an apartment, it's best to ask your neighbours if they experience the same lack of water pressure.
There are a couple of options you can take to try to resolve your low pressure issues. Whether you found that low pressure was affecting one or many of your taps, there will be some solutions in here for you.
Most taps in Australia have aerators, which will build up sediment, grit, and calcium buildup over time & use. Unscrew these with either your hands, a wrench wrapped in cloth, or you will need to use a key for that specific tap to unscrew them. Once unscrewed, inspect the capsule that contains the aerator; there will probably be debris on the back side of it. If the debris is not too troublesome, then soak the capsule in vinegar to break up the calcium buildup and, if necessary, use a toothbrush to agitate the calcium out. If none of this works, go to your local hardware store with the aerator, and they should be able to help you or contact us.
If a showerhead is your problem, then the steps you have to take will be similar, although you can skip the checks for debris and soak it in vinegar. This will soften up the calcium and will help the blockages clear through. Check the flow and repeat if necessary.
If your hot water pressure is low at all of your taps, then first check the water inlet (cold) on your water and check that the pipe is in good condition and the valve is completely open. The power of the cold water coming in pushes out the hot water, so ensure this flow is strong to start with.
If these fixes don't work, then you will have to call your Landlord, Strata or a Plumber
Plumbers often fix cases of low water pressure, and often for them it will be a quick fix and not damage your pocket too much. Here are the ways they can help:
Adjusting your Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV) - most PRVs are highly adjustable and can simply be out of tune. These are simple to adjust but require experience to ensure they get tuned correctly. Incorrect tuning can lead to damaging your appliances.
Replacing Corroded Pipe - whether your pipes are copper, PVC, or flexi, they will build up scale on the inside that will lead to a restriction in water flow. The simplest way to solve this is to replace the pipe that is affecting the flow. Additionally, plumbers use inspection tools that can often carve away this sediment buildup.
Finding and Patching Hidden Water Leaks - Plumbers have access to advanced leak detection devices that can detect leaks in the walls and even underground. Once diagnosed, they will be able to quickly resolve the leak and save on your water bill.
Diagnosing a Faulty Building Water Pump - If you live in apartments, then chances are there will be a main water pump that ensures water can reach all the way up to the top levels. If this pump is slightly clogged or not functioning at capacity, you will notice it even if you aren't on the top floor.
